Made in Cuba
In this book, Molly Mandell and James Burke, both writers and photographers, profile 30 creative professionals, makers and entrepreneurs in Cuba—artists employing recycled materials, collectors restoring antique furniture with limited supplies and designers creating an independent magazine with a USB distribution network. As a result of Cuba’s limited trade and imports, a striking and admirable DIY (do-it-yourself) attitude has cropped up throughout the country. This mentality exists well beyond pastimes and craft projects; it is simply a part of day-to-day existence and a testament to the self-reliance, resilience and creativity that permeates the culture. More than a tome on DIY solutions, the book offers an inside look into everyday life on the island. As such, Made in Cuba is not only a source of inspiration for creative professionals but also a personal guide to the country and its people.
Molly Mandell is an editor and art director, formerly at Kinfolk, and James Burke is a freelance writer and photographer. Molly and James first traveled to Cuba in 2015, when, under the Obama administration, the United States began publicly normalizing relations with the country. They spent significant time developing relationships with expert journalists and scholars but most importantly, with Cuban citizens who have offered them deeply personal insight into their lives. Though the duo has lived in some of the world’s most creatively rich cities, including Austin, Copenhagen and Berlin, they are passionate about travel and cultural exchange and can frequently be found on the road.
